Ohayocon 2005

Well, there is one thing that can be said for Ohyaocon 05 and master of ceremonies said it best, the cosplays this year have certainly gone down hill. As enjoyable as Ohayocon was, it was derived from seeing the “usual suspects” if you get my drift. From seeing all the people you only get to see every few months at whatever con or gathering that happens. Needless to say that the convention itself was rather lacking. I’m feeling lazy so lets do this in list Esq. form.

Considering it is one of the most predominant features of an anime convention let’s start with the cosplayers. For the love of god people I didn’t need to see a billion things from Katamari Damacy, it has been done get over it. The game is cool, dressing in a poorly thrown together outfit attempting to mimic the characters is not. As for some of the other more notable cosplays that were done, hate to really say it but nothing really stood out horribly, save the Nightmare which appeared in the masquerade, that people is a costume, even though it was falling apart by the end of the con you can see how much effort and attention to detail went into that baby.

While I am at it a few notes on the skits, if you are going to do a skit first off do something entertaining and that has not been done by a billion other people, the FFX Yuna sending dance for example, if I see that one more time in a cosplay masquerade I swear I am going to scream. Second if you are going to do a skit, fucking rehearse it. Do not come to a convention and THEN decide you are going to do a skit. Be prepared, know your lines, know your ques. Last thing. Yaoi, my damn God people homosexuality is not that entertaining. For a little while, when your fifteen years old it may be something to be curious about, amused by even. But if your so hell bent on watching two guys kiss there are gay bars that are much cheaper then an anime convention that you can go to.

Video programming to say the least was abysmal. Due to A.D.V. invasion of Ohayocon this year there were absolutely no fan subs shown, offending many veteran con goers as much as fans that just wanted to see something fresh and new. But hey, that’s ok we can all watch the newest market whoring of Evangelion, again and again…. And again… and again.

Live events ran pretty smoothly I suppose you could say. Aside from a few mishaps here and there at least the panels and random fun events with the guests were amusing. However, when two conflicting groups are sharing a convention center it is pretty damn sad when one has to send over piece makers in order to attempt to reduce and control the amount of bickering between the two factions. Everyone can thank Vic Mignogna ( Ed, Full Metal Alchemist, Kougaiji, Saiyuki and many more) for playing peacekeeper.

Video gaming, it is unbelievably sad when the best thing about a video gaming is the smell, however this time around, I can’t even give them that much credit. It doesn’t matter how much you scrub a room with D.D.R. in it, you cannot get rid of the stench of gamers. Gaming tournaments were poorly run at best Friday’s tournaments were delayed almost two hours over the fact that staff had first lost the game they intended to use, then had no memory card data for the game they co-opted. It seems to be the trend for anime conventions to use the most absurdly crappy hardware they can get their hands on. I am sorry people, Red Octane and Cobalt Flux are shitty pads no matter how you look at them. In stead of buying two 150$ DDR pads that will undoubtedly break, dish out the extra 100 dollars and rent yourself a freaking machine for the weekend.

All in all Ohyaocon definitely has some internal issues to work out and in all honesty the only thing that really made going to this convention worth while was seeing friends and acquaintances that you don’t get to see too often, Oh well, maybe next year will be better.
